How to learn Korean by yourself

Self-study fails on sequence, not effort. Fix the order and it works.

Teaching yourself Korean is entirely doable — plenty of fluent speakers never took a class. What sinks people isn't lack of discipline, it's doing the right things in the wrong order.

Here's a sequence that holds up.

Step one, free: the Hangul alphabet and syllable worksheets.

Weeks 1–2: the alphabet, nothing else

Resist every temptation to learn phrases yet. Two weeks on Hangul, ten to twenty minutes a day, until you can read a block without decoding it letter by letter.

Everything downstream — dictionaries, subtitles, apps, textbooks — works better after this.

Weeks 3–6: sound and survival

Shadowing: play a short Korean clip, say it simultaneously, over and over. Ugly, effective, and it builds the mouth muscles nothing else touches.

Alongside it, about a hundred useful words and ten sentence patterns. Not a thousand words. A hundred you can actually use.

Months 2–6: grammar with a spine

Pick one structured resource and finish it. A textbook, one course, one series — self-learners who hop between free resources learn the same beginner unit nine times and never reach chapter four.

Throughout: input you enjoy

Dramas, variety shows, podcasts, vlogs. Every day, even if you understand almost nothing. Your ear is quietly building a map of the language while you think you're relaxing.

  • Ten minutes of reading aloud, daily.
  • One structured grammar resource, finished.
  • Something Korean playing in your ears most days.
  • Speaking with a human at least weekly, once you're past month two.

Common questions

Can apps alone make me fluent?+

They'll carry you a long way through reading, vocabulary and grammar drills. They can't replace speaking with people.

How much time per day?+

Twenty focused minutes daily beats three hours every Sunday. Consistency is the whole game in self-study.

Both worksheets, free

The 4-page Hangul alphabet worksheet and the 2-page syllable bonus, emailed in seconds.
